Build your artistic vocabulary as you work sequentially to complete one finished figure painting. In a methodical, step-bystep process, learn the methods of oil painting from the initial color sketch to the final glaze. Over the course days we will dive into painting related issue while exploring the artists most fascinating subject matter- the human figure. You develop a preliminary drawing to ensure accuracy and likeness, create a monochromatic or color study to analyze shape, tone and composition and transfer your drawing to canvas or panel as you execute your painting in full color. Lectures and individual instruction aid your artistic progress. This workshop provides you with the necessary tools to bolster your artistic confidence. Much of the personal growth of the artist comes from having the right tools for self-correction and problem solving. With that in mind throughout the class, you participate in discussion on materials, methods and techniques to equip you with every possible tool for your future artistic growth. Using the 19th-century beaux arts curriculum, gain the skills to accurately and confidently draw the human figure. Learn to draw the figure’s essential structure and build upon that strong foundation with a study of value and form. Gain from a demonstration of the entire drawing process, discussions and opportunity to practice. Includes valuable advice for further study to continue making progress long after the class has ended.
Juliette Aristides is a Seattle-based painter who seeks to understand and convey the human spirit through art. She is the Director of The Classical Atelier at the Gage Academy of Fine Art in Seattle and the author of Classical Drawing Atelier, Classical Painting Atelier and the forthcoming Classical Drawing Handbook with publishers Watson-Guptill, and a frequent contributor to Artists Magazine. She exhibits her work nationally and is represented by Skotia Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and John Pence Gallery in San Francisco.
A PAFA alum, Aristides studied classical realism at Myron Barnstone Studios, the Atelier in Minneapolis in the tradition of Richard Lack, and the National Academy in New York, where she received the Wilder Prize for Drawing and the Albert Hallgarten Traveling Scholarship. She is also a recipient of the Elisabeth Greenshields Grant and a founding member of the Water Street Studio in Brooklyn, New York.

Spend a week painting in an idyllic farmhouse setting. Working from life and from the masters, you will follow traditional ideas and techniques as you develop vital tools for creating skillful, luminous still-life paintings in oil. You will explore varied working methods, creating direct alla-prima sketches in the mornings and extended compositions in the afternoons. The longer painting will start with a drawing, a tonal underpainting and will be built up through the color overpainting. The week will be an intense and rewarding tour of creating a painting from the ground up.
You will focus on composition, learning to create thoughtful, interesting arrangements and examine the relationships between masses of value, color and intensity in your still-life painting. Class discussions and ongoing instructor demonstrations help you to build successful skills for independent work and problem-solving proficiency. Develop your skills of portrait painting with this intensive workshop. Working from life and from the masters, you will follow traditional ideas and techniques of portrait painting as you develop vital tools for creating skillful portrait paintings. You will explore varied working methods through master copies, lectures and group discussions, spending a portion of each day working on topical issues such as drawing, composition, value, color and color theory, as you study the way the master artists of the past have handled such challenges. Over the four days, you also create one longer painting that develops from drawing to under painting through full color. Class discussions, slide lectures and instructor demonstrations focus on building skills for successful independent work and also illuminate ways to solve problems when you return to your own studio.

This course will provide an unparalleled opportunity to study classical drawing and painting in the birthplace of the Renaissance. Learn time-tested artistic principles by studying from masterpieces on location in museums, churches and architectural sites found in and around Florence. Studio days will be spent creating drawings and paintings from the model or still life. In the process we will improve our technical skills, hone our artistic vision and enjoy the camaraderie of living in Florence. This multi-faceted approach, learning through the study of the masters, in combination with working from observation will increase your artistic vision. This class will be a unique experience in the in the thought and techniques of the Renaissance.
Tuition for one class is $1950 (US) if deposit of $500 is received before Dec. 1. If the deposit is received after Dec. 1, tuition is $2100 (US).
